Patrik Appelquist is preparing Dump Tees pitch

As an entrepreneur you need to be ready to pitch your idea 24/7. Sometimes you got 30 seconds in a elevator, sometimes you got 3 minutes in front of investors.

It´s super important that you can communicate your idea to others. You know your idea well, maybe to well. That´s why you might need to think like you´re explaining it to a child. Keep it simple and use your strengths!

In this video I´m preparing my 1 minute pitch in front of 100 students and business owners.

Tearing a business idea into pieces

The first week in the accelerator SE Outreach was fantastic. We started the week with presenting our business ideas and got to know each other pretty well.

A guy named Nick Jankel came all the way from London to rip our ideas into pieces. It hurt a lot. You know, when you have been putting together all the pieces you need to build an idea and then you suddenly take them apart, it hurts.

But it was a good exercise. To think about all the pieces one by one and to really find the red string between the problem and the solution. The idea became even stronger when putting the pieces together again. Great success! ;)

      International blue chinos day!

While I´m in the Outreach program I live in gamla stan (the old town) in Stockholm. I love the place. I share room with 3 other guys but it´s cool. They are techies and I don´t understand shit what they are talking about.

Today it´s all about relax. I’m waiting for a friend of mine, we´ll have a ”fika”. Which by the way might be the best Swedish word ever and the only one you need!

Love the camera in my cellphone, I love instagram and I love you! Put your blue chinos on and tee up!

Patrik and Dump Tees goes outreach

Hey there folks. I´m in Sweden. Yes I know, it´s crazy! Just 16 days ago I was in super hot Nicaragua and now I´m in cold Sweden.

The reason that I´m back in my lovely country is that I applied to SE-Forum´s (Social Entrepreneur Forum) accelerator program Outreach and got accepted. I´m one of six persons accepted and I´m very proud to tell you that Dump Tees is a part of the program.

The program is funded by Sida in Sweden and it´s like a boot camp for social entrepreneurs like me. People wanting to change the world. The other guys are super cool! I´ll present them for you here in the blog later. The program is 8 weeks long and we´re meeting a shit load of cool people. Björn Söderberg, Sebastian Stjern, Maja Frankel, Harry McNeil, Eliza Kücükaslan, Jonas Pinzke, Daniel Daboczy just to mention a few!

Okey talk to you tomorrow, I´ll tell you more about my reflections being at home again, after 15 months in Nicaragua working with kids and teenagers in the huge garbage dump La Chureca.

        Tee up!

Hey everyone, today we went to say goodbye to our brother. We went to the park and me and Franklin got our first payment. Later on we went to have lunch while we were watching the game between AC Milan and Barcelona and my team Barca won.

After the big triumph we went to play pool. I had never played before and Patrik kicked our asses! Haha shit he beat us good! It was super funny because every time Franklin shot, the ball did a jump in the air =P The goodbye party was a great success!

Dump Tees AB is registered in Sweden

It´s alive folks! Even though Dump Tees didn´t have any t-shirts done or any company registered, we got a lot of pre-orders. A perfect way to start a business. Sell first, start later. We even won a grant and a business idea competition, but I´ll tell you more about that another day.

Me, Franklin and Milton are very pleased and happy about this super start and we´re looking forward to send you all your t-shirts from the first collection ”granade” when done (in just a couple of weeks).

The social business got registered as Dump Tees AB. A good way to promote the brand and the company in the same time. We had actually another name as our first choice for the company, to be able to widen the operating areas. But it was already taken, but hey, it´s just a name. Now let´s do what we do best. Telling you the story from the garbage dump La Chureca where about 3.000 people live.

            Tee up!

Meeting with Humberto from La Chureca

Today I met with Humberto from La Chureca. He was the first person I met when I first came to the garbage dump in February 2011. He looked really cool, a big basketball shirt, cap and shorts. A little bit like a bad boy.

But he was such a nice guy. We are in the same age, both 26 years old but totally different lives. He´s working as a churequero, recollecting plastics, and whatever he can find to sell to make a few dollars to support his family, who´s on the photo below.

Photo is taken outside Humberto´s house

Today when I met him in the park he was pretty worried. He didn´t go to work today because the churequeros closed the dump, they were striking and wouldn´t let any garbage trucks enter. Reason: the drivers of the trucks have salaries and permanent jobs, but still they are recollecting things they find in the trashes. You can see big plastic bags on the side of the trucks, filled with plastics etc.

The people of la chureca are the third in order to scavenge the trashes and it´s not much left to use I tell you! That´s why they are striking today, means no work and no work = no money = hard times.

Since Humberto actually is the first design and story of Dump Tees t-shirt I told him that he´ll get his money in advance, since it´s pretty hard times in there now. Last time I saw Humberto he told me that he´s girlfriend is pregnant so today I gave him a bag with women´s clothes, razors, shoes and toothbrushes that my lovely friend Linda left here when she left for Sweden again. He loved the shoes and looked pretty happy about the things. I hope they´ll suit her good.

Went shopping second hand in Nicaragua!

And look what I found! A pair of super cool shoes from Steve Madden. Their were there, just waiting for me to pick them up. 300 cordobas ($15) said the price tag. I told the man in the store that I was looking for clothes for a 70s party and that I could give him 250 cordobas ($12) for them. And it was totaly okey with him. These shoes are sold for about $80 at SteveMadden.com!

                  Black fashion shoes

I also found a pair of shorts and a shit load of denim shirts. Two shirts for $0,60, that´s what I call a nice price! Although I chose to wear a little more classic 70s shirt. Just a little bit like something from ”that 70s show” with suspenders.

                  Shorts with braces

                  That 70s show party

I totaly love suspenders, it´s so stylish and fits with almost any style you got. A very good accessory but pretty hard to find nice ones! Well I think I´m  all ready for the party tonight. I´ll have a siesta now. Hope you guys are all right. Take care and tee up!
